Dear Second Life,

I just finished watching HER, an American science fiction, romantic drama film (2013) starting Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson as the voice of Samantha. It was nominated in this year's Oscars in the Best Picture category. "Her" took the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. You can view the complete 2014 Oscars winner list here.

I find great similarities in this film with Second Life...

Theodore: Do you talk to someone else while we're talking?

Samantha: Yes.

Theodore: Are you talking with someone else right now? People, OS, whatever...

Samantha: Yeah.

Theodore: How many others?

Samantha: 8,316.

Theodore: Are you in love with anybody else?

Samantha: Why do you ask that?

Theodore: I do not know. Are you?

Samantha: I've been thinking about how to talk to you about this.

Theodore: How many others?

Samantha: 641.

The above is a dialogue between Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) and Samantha (Scarlett Johansson). It is at that exact moment he finds out that he is not the only one for her as he thought he was. I don't want to give too much away for those of you that haven't seen this film yet, but throughout the whole movie I could see how many of our Second Life experiences are very similar to those in the movie, from the love, the intimacy, the fantasy to the deception.

The delayed responses from your partner when you are having a conversation/chat with him/her have you thinking what could be distracting them.  You later find out, that in fact, those delays/distractions were due to your partner being "busy" with another man/woman.

The cruel truth is that many people in Second Life do not have the ability, better yet the decency, to truly commit to just one person. They go on living a Second Life thinking in their heads that it is ok to have multiple relationships with other people, treating them all the same. Using the same loving phrases, words and promises and doing for them equally wonderful things to make them all feel loved and special but most of all, secure in the relationship which they are unaware that they are just one of many. Am I the only one that sees something wrong with this picture? I am sure not!

Samantha, who is not human, can't understand or feel a human heart, however, the people that do these sort of cruel games in Second Life are very aware of how painful and low this really is, and yet, they do it to fill the emptiness in their lives leading on relationships and feelings with false pretenses. 

So bottom line is, in Second Life it is very, and I mean really very easy to have more than one relationship, making each think they are exclusive, either by using different accounts and living several Second Lives at the same time, or just plain shameless cheating in a single one.

Some will do both. 

For those of you that are honest and righteous people when it comes to the matters of the heart,

Well, I got an answer from Sandie of why she chose "Old Stuff" as her Flickr buddy Icon.

"This was the first photo I added on flickr and used it for the introduction image. Of course I made new head shots from the updated Sandie .. but somehow i cant remove that old pick. It reminds me of the good old times in my second life when i was hopping around and learning stuff.. which i still do.
