"The biggest journey you will ever take is the 18 inches from your head to your heart."
- Andrew Bennett
Heart and mind are equally powerful when it comes to decision-making. Both can either sink me into
despair and devastation or raise me into triumph and prosperity. The trick is to know when it is
wise to use one over the other. Unfortunately, I was not given a pamphlet to guide me through life
when I was born. I had to learn as I went through life from the trillion of mistakes I will for sure
continue to make. Maybe that is why I have so many heartbreaks and headaches, and... anyways.
When it comes to love, I tend to ignore what the head says, and I will only listen to the heart.
And then, when it is too late, I kick myself and promise never to make the same mistake again, and
then I go and make the same mistake again and again and again. I just never learn!
While the head is the brain of my existence, the heart is the part that keeps me human.
If I were to always listen only to the head, I wouldn't be able to feel kindness and compassion for
another human being. There needs to be a balance between both when I am confronted with life's
situations. Value both insights from both parts equally and let them both meet in the middle, allowing
one to take the reins in the direction necessary while the other co-pilots.
For example...
When I am confronted by unpleasant situations and personal attacks, I tend to ignore the negativity
that this can bring. Life is too short, and there are more important things to worry about or be happy
about than to engage in battles created by others. I truly believe that anger and aggression are
signs of pain. Surely someone who lives a happy life wouldn't have time or want to waste precious time
causing harm to others; there is no way. So instead of feeling retaliation, I feel sadness for them.
This is both my head and heart working together hand in hand.
My head tells me to understand where this person is coming from. They must be going through life's
struggles and suffering that I don't know about.
And then, that is when my heart tells me not to feel anger for them, but to feel compassion.
Those who hurt us are the ones who need more of our understanding and patience.
Surely at some point, they will either find some healing and leave me alone or move on to their
next victim. Either way, no battles can last a lifetime.
