CATFISH... by Valkiria Fox

FIFTY5 THURSDAY

Imagine that it's another SL day and you are anxious to see your boyfriend again,
to hug him and spend some wonderful hours at his side. How you waited for that moment!
He logs and you send him a TP so you can see each other one more time.
He arrives and you cannot wait and run to his arms...what a happiness ^_^
But you perceive a silence from the other side...your baby is in a killer silence
and you start to suspect that something is wrong. What could that be???
Then, when he decides to say something, those are the words:

"I have a confession to make."

Your bones freeze and you say:

"Go ahead, my love."

So he says:

"I'm a girl!"

Creepy silence...now your bones are not frozen anymore, they are breaking into pieces

with such a stroke. So...what now? What would you do?
Fortunately I had never been through this situation, but I know many people on SL that already did,
and believe me, it's devastating. Because you imagine that your love can be lying about name,
age, marital status, job, city, etc... but about gender is always a hard hit.
That reminded me of a very nice show that sometimes I watch on MTV called Catfish:

catfish: the show
http://www.mtv.com/shows/catfish/

The presenter is a man that felt in love for a girl on Internet but had never seen her

on a web cam or bodily. They were together for a long time until he discovered
the girl was not the one on the photos she had sent him, but another girl completely different.
So he was disillusioned, but kept the friendship with her. With this sad happening
he decided to make a movie telling his story and it gave origin to the MTV reality TV series, Catfish:
The TV Show. On his television program, he and his brother try to help people on the same situation
that he was on the past: they know someone through the Internet,  they are romantically involved with
the person, but they don't know if the person is really who he/she says to be.
So he and his brother investigates until they are able to make a date between the couple.
The program is very breathtaking because you never know what will happen when
the couple finally see each other. And the worst: you never know who will appear on the date.
So there are many cases. I think the most common is the one where the person is not
who appears in the photos. But there are cases in which the person lied about all his/her life,
there are cases in which the person is just playing with people,
there are even cases in which the person pretends to be another to give moral lessons to netizens.
There is a crazy for everything. But you can see that the most impactful cases are the one
in which the person is lying about gender. Because usually who looked for the Catfish show
never imagined the possibility of being romantically in love with someone with a different gender.
So it's in that time that you see the most opened mouths and terrified faces.
And yes, this for sure happen in Second Life much more than you imagine.
Here it's easier to trick people and impersonate another person.
A friend once told me that about 60% of the women here are actually guys.
I don't know if this number is right, but I am very sure that the number is a big one.
One solution here would be to politely ask your love about the possibility of trying a voice chat.
This is another discussion point on SL as some people do it normally and other cannot
even think about exposing their voices. But the voice chat could give you at least the tranquility
to be talking to a person with your preference gender.
If you ask me about what I would do if that happened to me, I would say:
I HAVE NO IDEA.
This is the kind of thing that only when it happens to you, you know what to do.
