The Ice-Cream Man

ICE CREAM

Once as I was walking with my kids at the park across from our home, 

we saw an old man under a tree with an ice cream cart.

He seemed to be very tired.

The temperature was above 100°F, 

and his shoes had holes on them, probably from walking 

and pushing that cart every day 

for hours selling his ice cream bars.

His clothes looked worn out and sweaty, 

still, his wrinkled face was lit by a sweet smile.

After we bought some ice cream from the old man, 

we stood just a few steps from him. 

Suddenly, a young man approximately in his mid-30s came to the old man 

to buy an ice cream bar.

He then proceeded to have a small conversation with the ice cream man, 

saying that the days were too hot and how glad he was to be able to stay indoors

in the nice cool AC watching TV... then he left.

Minutes later, the old ice cream man starts walking away from us,

struggling while pushing the heavy cart and with

an out-of-breath voice saying, "ICE CREAM, ICE CREAM!"

And still, in his struggle, I noticed his sweet smile as he turned back to look our way.

I noticed the sadness in my kids' eyes as they saw the old man push the cart.

And with teary eyes, my daughter said to me how sorry they felt for the old man.

I told them that in fact, it was sad that this grandpa had to be working at that age,

in the hot sun pushing that heavy cart,

but that to me it was so admirable more than anything else that I had just witnessed.

"You want to know who I really feel sorry for?" I asked my kids.

"I feel sorry for the young man that does nothing but watches TV all day long,

what a shame, what a waste of a life."

But I feel so much admiration for the old man, so much respect. 

What an example to all of us."

And then as we crossed the street back to our home, 

I could still hear "ICE CREAM.... ICE CREAM.... ICE CREAM..."

And I smiled and thought... "Blessings!
