Featuring SECRET WEDNESDAY |
Another day I was having a shower and looking at the thin hair I have on arms. Even though I'm an assiduous user of the Brazilian waxing, I decided for not taking out my hair on that region, as it is almost invisible. But a question came to my mind: why do we have hair on body? And then I remembered that we came from monkeys, so it would be obvious that we should have hair. But then I started to think about all monkeys I had already seen on TV, at the zoo, or even on the trees. I perceived that all of them have hair all over their bodies, not only in some parts as it happens with the human being. So, the question: why do we have less hair than monkeys? One of the answers that came to my mind was that by any reason we didn't need to get warm anymore. But it made no sense. Of course we needed to get warm, just like all the other animals. So I ended my shower and went to watch a little of TV. I put at the Animal Planet, as it is one of my favorite channels because I do love animals. And a documentary was about to start. It was called "Sereias" (Mermaids: The Body Found). The first thing I thought was: not possible that now also the Animal Planet will put stupid things for us to watch, oh no...But I kept seated on the sofa, curiosity was bigger. So they showed a beautiful documentary that answered my question: we don't have much hair on body because at any time one of our ancestors migrated to near the sea, as there it is a place where you can take many kinds of sea animals to eat, as well as seaweed. Passing a good part of time in the border of the sea made our ancestors to lose hair little by little. Why? Because aquatic animals would be better at the sea without hair, as less hair means less water resistance against our moves when we swim. And I was happy to have my question answered. The documentary talked about a supposed theory that a group of scientists had that there is a hominy under the seas. This hominy would have a common ancestor with us, but would have migrated to the water, instead of being in the earth. So they would be similar with the mermaids that for many years people that made long sea travels affirmed to see: a human being that instead of legs had a fish tail. But completely bald of course, and with a skin tone that would make them disguised at the sea. Theoretically almost all the evidences that this group of scientists had taken were arrested my the local army. Being or not true, the documentary is well based and shows a lot of good arguments. So I decided to look for it in the Internet and it was a surprise when I saw that this documentary was very ridiculed and put at the same level as UFOS. I think it's a pity that our Academies have been behaving as the Catholic Church did at the Middle Ages: to be the owner of absolute knowledge, closing their eyes to new theories and different ways of thinking, and ridiculing all the is not yet described on their booklets. That's a pity, because as we have been seeing through our history, for many times deep beliefs fell because another discovery had a better way to describe our world. Anyway, I think it's interesting to watch that documentary. You can find some parts of it at: http://animal.discovery.com/tv-shows/mermaids/videos/mermaids.htm
