Dear Second Life, Let me start this beautiful Friday by thanking all of those people that participated and still continue to participate in our Feed The Homeless act of kindness this week. God bless your hearts! The week is almost over but showing kindness to the less fortunate shouldn't end with the week. I encourage you to continue doing this beautiful act every time you can. I ask of this not only from my readers from my country, USA, but for everyone that reads this blog from any part of the world. There are homeless people in every corner of this planet and this includes children, the elderly, women and men and let's keep in mind that some of them may be sick and probably disabled. We never know what awaits for us or for our children in the future but wouldn't we want someone to show some kindness to us or our loved ones if, God forbid, we find ourselves in the street, cold and hungry? Let me share with you a beautiful story about something I experienced when I was in the 3rd grade... Fed By The Children ~ A True Story Of Kindness ~ There he was, wearing winter clothes on a hot summer day. We were afraid of him, yet our curiosity was bigger than our fear so we ran to see the man that the day before had built what looked like a kid's playhouse, only this house wasn't colorful and strong. He had built a home for himself out of cardboard boxes, hidden in the tall, grassy area behind our school. At first a small group of us would run all the way to the back of the school during our lunch break to go see "the crazy man". We were fascinated and intrigued by this being but for some reason, we confused his state of homelessness with craziness. It didn't take long for us to discover that the "crazy" homeless was in fact a sweet man. Soon the word spread around among other students in our grade, creating an even bigger group that would visit the sweet man during our lunch break. Then the miracle happened, kindness touched our hearts! We started sneaking food out of the cafeteria for our sweet friend: an apple, crackers, an enchilada wrapped in a napkin, a small carton of milk, even salt and pepper. No one that was friends with the sweet man would leave the cafeteria empty handed. It was like our grade had adopted him and so we were happy to share our food with him. We were always looking forward to lunch because that meant our friend would soon be eating too. We would eat in a hurry and then run to share with him what we had been served. Many of us were no longer interested in playing ball or running around the playground. We wanted to spend as much time as we could with our friend. He was kind and would listen to our stories, always with a smile. The only thing that separated us from him was a tall, linked fence, but this didn't stop us from sharing with him our cafeteria food or giving him drawings we had made for him, which he would tape to his cardboard house. We felt proud to see our drawings being placed on his home. It was a real honor for us. Time passed and our love for this stranger grew and I have a feeling, he too started to loved us. We never felt unsafe with him because he never gave us a reason to fear him. Weeks passed, then a month, then two ... It was a Monday morning, we hurried to see our friend, taking him our share of our cafeteria food, but he wasn't there. His cardboard house laid flat on the floor and many of the drawings we gave him were scattered around. His home had been destroyed. We sat and waited, some of us crying. The bell rang but we didn't want to move. We wanted to wait for him; we wanted to see our sweet friend. Finally, a teacher came to get us, we kept asking her for our friend, but all she told us was "He is gone." But gone where ... where? Days passed and some of us continued to sneak food out, hoping that the sweet man would returned. We sat and waited day after day by the spot his cardboard home once stood. The grass had been cleared out and the destroyed home was gone and so were our drawings. We continued to bring him food, leaving it by the fence for him, but he never returned. We never found out what happened to our friend. What is strange is to me now is, how was it that this beautiful being was able to live near our playground for months. I wonder if the school staff knew about the homeless man living behind our school but knew he was harmless so they allowed him to stay. I have never forgotten about him. This sweet man made us feel so important and proud. He would listen to a bunch of kids tell silly stories always with a smile. He would honor us by taping our pictures to his small cardboard house. And, I will never forget his hand reaching through the link fence for the food we would sneak out from the cafeteria for him everyday. I will never forget his smile. Forever Yours, ~ Lori Novo ~ ❤
