Lucy In My Heart

This Post Is Dedicated To
LUCY

Dear Second Life,
Let me tell you about Lucy.
When she was just a pup she was rescued from her abusive owners by an animal shelter and put up for
adoption. One of my daughter's friends and her family were the blessed family that got to take this
beautiful special gift home. Lucy had been severely abused by her previous owners and required so
much care and patience but above all, love. Slowly, and with their constant loving care, she was brought
back to good health. However, it took much longer for her to gain back the trust in humans. My
daughter used to say that Lucy would run and hide every time she would see people other than her
adoptive family. But who she feared the most was men. After a long time, and with the love of her
adoptive family, she eventually regained her trust in humans but remained shy. This wonderful family
was giving her the love and care in handfuls, the same love and care that every animal deserves.
Everything seemed to be okay.

Recently the family started noticing that Lucy would urinate constantly and it seemed that she couldn't
help it. She was taken to the veterinary and after some tests, she was unfortunately diagnosed with
cancer. She was put right away into treatment and the family did everything the doctor recommended
for her. Sadly, none of their efforts seemed to work. Lucy's health deteriorated rapidly and
consequentially her health was affected in more ways. Ultimately she went partially blind which
required even more care than before, which her adoptive family was all so lovingly giving her.

Lucy
was now not only blind but was in pain .... constant pain.
Her family took her this week to the veterinary to see what else they could do to ease her pain but the
news was not good. She was given six months to live. The family returned home feeling sad and
hopeless. But they didn't want to lose faith, or at least they wanted her last six months to be filled with
all their love.

But a hard decision was made three days ago. After seeing how she was suffering they decided that they
love her too much to let her suffer a slow, painful death. They made the decision as a family to put her
to sleep. Yesterday, family and friends went to see her, take photos with her, give her their love and say
farewells to this beautiful and amazing animal.

Today Lucy is finally resting. She was put to sleep earlier during the day.
She is no longer suffering.

My dear readers,
for those of you that have never had a pet, I know it would be hard to understand how painful it is to
lose one. The pain is so great that it tears the heart apart. Our pets stop being our pets and become an
important part of our families.  I too had to make that hard decision of having to put to sleep our Oreo.
Oreo was the kitten that we rescued after he had fallen from a roof and hit his head so hard that it left
him completely disabled. Having to sign that paper giving permission to put our Oreo to sleep was one
of the hardest things I have done. To this day, I cry and can't help feeling guilty for letting him go. What
gives me comfort is knowing that Oreo is no longer suffering and I refer to him now as my furry little
angel.

Here are some stories I wrote about our little Oreo

We as adults have a hard time coping with the death of our beloved pets. But can you imagine how hard
it is for a child to comprehend and accept such loss? Back in my Pico Perfect Blog I often would
receive mail from children that had lost their pets and needed me to help them understand why their pets
had to go. Trying to find the right words to explain to a child why this happened was one of the hardest
things. I had kids from the early age of 7 to teenagers asking for my help on this subject many times. I
always tried to help them, try finding the words and an explanation according to their age. I just hope
that they found some comfort in my words.

This is one of the many letters I would receive

"Ok my hamster died on June Saturday 25.
I'M HEARTBROKEN!
WHY DID HE HAVE TO GO?!

My reply

And finally, this article below was written by one of my Pico Perfect guest writers.

Before I go, I would like to send all my love to Lucy and her amazing loving adoptive family.
She is now chasing butterflies in heaven with my furry little angel Oreo and all the beautiful other pets
that have gone on to heaven to rest.

Looking up to the sky in search of that new bright star
LUCY

Forever Yours,
~ Lori Novo ~
